Pearl Group Optimizer Basic

Joomla! 1.5 Native Plugin

The Simple Way to Run Website Optimizer

Radically improve your site's performance with our free plugin and the Google Website Optimizer. Create your experiment, cut and paste Google's scripts, add a few simple tags to your content, then sit back and wait for Google to tell you what works best.

This Basic version lets you run only one experiment at a time, but don't fret, we now offer our Pro version, which will let you run multiple experiments at the same time and will even let you import the Javascript code to make things easier.  Read about the Pearl Group Optimizer Pro for Joomla! 1.5 or get your copy right now.

Setup & Configuration

Set up and Configuration is simple, quick and painless. Here's how to get started.

Install the Plugin

Create your Experiment on Google

Designing an experiment is beyond the scope of this, however Google offers a wealth of information on the topic.  Once you're ready, set up your experiment on Google's Website Optimizer.  Google will ask for several URLs when setting up your experiment, if you're using SEF, remember to use the SEF version of the URLs. When you reach Step 2 - Install and validate JavaScript tags, do the following:

  • Pick the You will install and validate the JavaScript tags option
  • You're now ready to set things up in Joomla.

Download now!

Configure the Plugin

  • In Joomla's Administrator, pull down the Extensions Menu and pick Plugin Manager
  • Filter on the word Google
  • Click on "System - Google Website Optimizer Plugin (Basic)".
  • Toggle back over to the Google Website Optimizer page, and cut and paste each of the three Script types, Control, Tracking and Conversion into the correct boxes.  Google may show multiple copies of the Tracking script, these are identical so either one will work. NOTE:  The current version of this plugin does not validate the Javascript code, so double check that you've put the right scripts in the right boxes!
  • Change the Plugin Order to LAST. This will avoid the possibility of other plugins (e.g., SEF) altering the Google Website Optimizer scripts after the plugin inserts it into your page.
  • Enable the Plugin.
  • Click "Save" at the top.
  • NOTE:   We've tested this plugin extensively.  Still, it's always a smart practice to check your site and make sure it works in your exact configuration.  If you run into any problems, disable the plugin right away and contact us with the specifics.

You're almost there!  Next, you'll need to tell the plugin which pages are in the experiment, with a few tags.  Here's how to set that up:

Mark,

Thanks for letting us know about this. Some plugins may alter the Google Analytics script after our plugin adds it to the page. To avoid this sort of issue, change the Plugin Order so that the Website Optimizer plugin executes AFTER the SEF plugin. The easiest way to do this is to change the ORDER to 9999 in the PLUGIN MANAGER (EXTENSIONS tab in the Administrator), and click the SAVE ORDER icon.

Thanks for pointing this out, we'll update the documentation to include this.

Mike

Hi there,

Love the plugin. We found a small issue if someone is using SEF on there site. ( which I'm sure many are).

There issue is that the original GWO gets re-written, stopping it from functioning correctly.

eg. this line:

document.write('

Sandra, thanks for the feedback. We took your advice and updated the documentation. In an A/B Experiment, Google shows the same Tracking script under Variations and Original. These scripts are identical, so just cut and paste the first one into the plugin parameters and the experiment.

Hey there

You may want to include in your instructions for A/B testing that the tracking script is the same for the original and the variations pages. I was looking at your plugin wondering where to put the tracking script for the variation pages, and wasn't till I compared the code I realised it was the same for all of them.

Wow, great plugin, especially if it can do multivariate experiments.

I haven't tried it yet as we're still on Joomla 1.0, with a view to upgrading to 1,6 when it's out of Beta.

Are you guys going to support 1.6?
